Considering all of this, remember to persevere through these next days to revival in your heart as Easter approaches and we mark the ascension of Christ. In verse 5 we should ask for wisdom any time we need it and in verse 6 we learn that we cannot waiver like the sea tossed in the wind or we are like a double minded man who is unstable in all of his ways. Perseverance brings with it maturity and completeness in our faith so that we do not lack anything we need in our faith. James chapter 1 verse 2 tells us that the testing of our faith will develop perseverance in our character. When all is said and done, there is liberty and freedom to explore new heights of faith. The first step cannot be skipped or ignored because if it is, the ultimate goal, to reach the finish line will not be reached. Many times in order to accomplish the task, you must take a step that isn’t so pleasant. Sometimes the first step is an enjoyable one, a rush of hopeful victory. In order to win a race it means training, hard work, aches and pains, muscle spasms and lots of sweat. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations (3) Knowing, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. What is your heart’s desire? Then press in and go with God as He walks you forward. We can have short term goals and long term goals. Reach for those things and keep your eyes on the prize because you are called out of darkness into His marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9) Instead of wallowing or dwelling on what seems to be impossible, held back by the woes of yesterday, press in on those things that God calls you to work toward. The only thing that can perhaps change the way you feel about the past are the steps you take toward your tomorrow. They are over and there is nothing that can change your past. This is why Paul says, “ forgetting those things that are behind”. If one dwells on them it makes yesterday scream louder, preventing us from hearing the voice of God leading us into the beautiful plans that God has for our future. Yes, perhaps you and I have regrets, deep wounds and failures. You cannot press into tomorrow if you are always dwelling on what happened yesterday. You cannot go forward very easily if your eyes are always looking back and your head is turned behind you. His words ring true and they are words of wisdom. That prize is the only thing he is reaching for, the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. His very words tell the Phillipians that there’s a mark, a target that he has his eye on. Paul gives instruction to the Phillipians by example of his own life motto and encourages them to forget the things which are behind and reach for things to come. ![]() The way that he sees himself as one who is not held back, has everything to do with how he will approach what is ahead of him in life. He has a determination and a goal that will not sway him. His point of view about himself is very clear. He does not see himself as ‘held back” or apprehended, as he says. In just this one verse, the apostle Paul is giving us lessons to live by. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ![]()
